Club History

Portman Road was first used as a venue to play football in 1884. At that time the Club was called Ipswich AFC, there was also a rugby club, called Ipswich FC. In 1888 the two clubs came together and called themselves Ipswich Town. They played on the training pitch behind the Britannia Stand which was part of a cricket club at that time.

In 1890 Ipswich Town became one of the first clubs to use goal nets. The cricket club became worried that the pitch was being destroyed by playing cricket and football on it but there was no money to build a separate club. There were no stands like we have today and no seats. This changed in 1905 when a fence was built around the ground and a wooden stand was built on Portman Road, this cost £230.00

Be a Mascot

If you are a Junior Blues member and you want to be a mascot, here’s what you need to do:

Complete the application form and return it to the Junior Blues team here at Portman Road. Don’t forget that you need to get your parent/guardian to sign the form with you. All the forms are put into a monthly ballot, and the lucky mascots are chosen at random. The sooner we receive your form, the more ballots you can be a part of. If you are one of the lucky ones, we will write to you with details of your match and tell you what you need to do. Please remember that although there is no charge to be a mascot you will need to provide a full current kit (home or away) to wear on the day, and be accompanied by one parent or guardian. If you are not a season ticket holder you will also need to purchase match tickets.
