ITFC v Coventry Match Report

Ipswich Town 4 – Coventry City 1

Portman Road is buzzing 18,840 spectators have arrived to cheer on the Sky Blues or the Super Blues. Referee Trevor Kettle blows the whistle and the game begins.

Coventry started very sharp with Dele Adebola dominating the scoring third with his strike partner Leon Best and Jay Tabb in support.

Captain Jason De Vos led from the back directing and challenging Adebola in aerial combat. De Vos leading by example opened the scoring after nine minutes by heading in a Garvan free kick straight into the bottom corner. 1-0 up and Ipswich begin to take charge but goals are denied at both ends with Alan Lee and Leon Best not finding the back of the net.

Ipswich’s second came about with a diagonal ball from Dan Harding which met the head of Jon Walters who found Pablo Counago to collectively round two defenders and slipped it past keeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos to double Towns lead.

Trevor Kettle used his yellow card for the first time: shown to Town midfielder Owen Garvan for a late challenge in the thirty-third minute.

Dan Harding came close to his first goal for Ipswich but Stephen Wright denied him with a goal-line clearance. Unfortunately Coventry couldn’t clear the ball, Gary Roberts crossed the ball into the path of Jon Walters to head it down into the bottom corner. 3-0 Ipswich Town, two minutes extra time and Ipswich Town players go in proud.

Coventry begin the second half with a bang as Adebola nearly took advantage of a misunderstanding between Alex Bruce and Neil Alexander. Within ten minutes Adebola was substituted for the pace of Michael Mifsud.

Pablo Counago found the net again in the fifty-sixth minute due to another set piece causing problem for Coventry’ s defence.

Ipswich now comfortably ahead took their foot off the pedal but a brilliant free kick from Coventry’s Steven Hughes saw the away side with a consolation goal.

Appearances from Billy Clarke, Jaime Peters and Chris Casement saw Ipswich to the end and a well deserved win.
